The Scrap Princess

Age:

I am 28 years old

How many kids?

I have one daughter who will be turning 3 this fall.

Where do you live?

I live in Hartford, CT with my husband and daughter. I am originally from Mt. Pleasant, PA, which is a very small town southeast of Pittsburgh.

How long have you been married?

My husband and I have been married almost 7 years and have been together for 11 years.

What business do you do?

I am the owner of The Scrap Princess™, a digital scrapbooking site that offers digital design elements such as printable papers, page kits, embellishments, alphas, cards and more. It is dedicated to paper-crafting with a digital element. All of the items can be used in image editing software such as Paint Shop Pro® or Photoshop® to layout scrapbook album pages. The items can also be printed out to use in traditional albums.

What made you pick the business that you are doing?

I have had a great passion for graphic design for many years and started out by making signature tags and banners for others in many online groups.  I studied graphic design for 3 years learning Photoshop® and am self-taught in Paint Shop Pro®.  I entered and won a few contests over the years with my signature tag creations and received a lot of compliments on and requests for my work.  I really enjoy scrapbooking too so I decided to combine the two and turn my hobby into a profession.  The name The Scrap Princess™ came from my daughter’s nickname (the drama princess lol)  and she truly is my inspiration.

What are your favorite hobbies?

I absolutely cannot live without opening my graphic design programs during the day at least once.  I get inspired from just going outdoors or shopping and even when I am working out.  Graphic design is one of my favorite hobbies and scrapbooking is a very close second.  I also do mosaic tile projects such as frames, mirrors, and trays with glass, ceramic & metal. I have just recently started knitting and love sewing as well.  Hmmm the next project on the horizon though involves gardening and also re-upholstering my dining room chairs.  I guess you could say I am very “craft-oriented”.  I usually have quite a few projects going on at once.

Do you find it hard to balance working from home and having to run a
household?

Some days yes, it is a challenge. Having a toddler at your feet (or hanging on your shoulders, or begging to play with more playdoh lol) when you are working is no easy task. I find it easier some days and harder others to be honest with you.  I usually do most of my work at night when the household calms down.  I find that because I keep my office very organized and make a lot of lists that I get more items done than when I used to store it all in my head.  I also devote most of my weekends to keeping my home in order and spending time with my family.  It takes practice and self-discipline.

Do you take time for yourself everyday?

I would love to say yes but there are some days that fly right by and I haven’t even sat down for 5 minutes.  I am working on this though (one of my New Year’s resolutions).  I am averaging about 3 days a week with definite “me” time.

What is the most challenging thing working from home that you have had to
face?

The most challenging thing has been raising my daughter and keeping up with the housework while building a business.

How did you overcome that challenge?

Truly it is all about self-discipline.  If you make goals for your day or week or month and they are reasonable goals with your lifestyle, you can accomplish just about anything you focus on. I try to devote certain times to my family and other times to my business.

What is the BEST thing about working from home?

I love being able to stay at home with my daughter.  It is something I always wanted to do and I am happy to have the ability to do it.  I love being able to run errands when I need to. I don’t have meetings to attend and best of all, I can work in my pajamas if I choose.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about working from
home?

Working from home is sometimes viewed as being easy. I would definitely say that this is not the case.  You have to be disciplined with your time and also your family’s time. If you don’t find a balance it is easy to become stressed and give up.  It takes a lot of effort to get a business up and running and it takes even more effort to make it profitable.  Do your homework when researching what you would like to do from home and also make sure you have a passion for it.  Because you set your own deadlines and goals, it is very easy to get distracted when you don’t have to answer to anyone.  But more than anything else, customer service is number one when it comes to online businesses.  Customers want fast follow-up and it is a challenge to keep in contact with your customer base.  Be a steady promoter of your business and it will pay off.

Tell us a little bit about where you live, what you like to do on
your downtime with your family and how using your products or services could
help us.

I live in Hartford, Connecticut and spend most of my time between here and Pennsylvania with our families.  My husband & I both have family in the Pittsburgh area.  It is beautiful here in New England and while I do get home sick every now and then, I am comfortable here after 10 years.  The autumn here is breathtaking and is very inspiring.  I also love spending time at the beach and we are only 45 minutes away.  The ocean is my absolute favorite spot.  The waves crashing, the sounds and smells are all very relaxing to me.

Most of the time my husband & I are chasing after our daughter lol.  She is the center of our universe and we are enjoying watching her grow up, although we wish not so quickly.  We take her out on the weekends and spend family time together which is very important to her and also to us.  When we have time to ourselves we attend concerts, go to sporting events & just hang out.  We both love comedies and watch a lot of silly movies as well.  It’s one of the best feelings in the world to be married to your best friend.  He is also a source of my inspiration.

The products that The Scrap Princess™ offers are called Royal Scraps and they truly enhance scrapbook pages, whether digital or traditional.  They can be downloaded very easily and printed out on your home computer if you wish.  You can also create your pages within an image editing program such as Paint Shop Pro® by layering all of the elements and then have them printed by a printing service on 12x12 pages to insert directly into your albums.  Please visit www.TheScrapPrincess.com  for more details.

All of the Royal Scraps are meant to stir your creativity and help you create beautiful layouts and cards to preserve your memories for generations to come.
